  • Bit depth is usually expressed in bits per sample, and it affects the precision and accuracy of the audio representation. The most common bit depths used in music production are 16-bit, 24-bit, and 32-bit. Here’s a breakdown of each:


  • This is the standard bit depth used in audio CDs. With a 16-bit resolution, there are 65,536 possible amplitude values. This provides a dynamic range of approximately 96 decibels (dB). While 16-bit audio is suitable for most listening scenarios, it has limitations when it comes to capturing subtle details and low-level audio signals.


  • Many modern digital audio workstations (DAWs) and audio interfaces support 24-bit audio recording and playback. With a 24-bit resolution, there are 16,777,216 possible amplitude values. This significantly improves the dynamic range to about 144 dB, allowing for greater detail and capturing of quieter sounds. Recording and mixing in 24-bit is preferred by many professionals as it provides more headroom and fidelity during the production process.

32-bit (floating-point): –

  • Some high-end DAWs and professional audio equipment support 32-bit floating-point audio. This format offers an incredibly wide dynamic range of over 190 dB, making it ideal for recording, processing, and mixing without any loss of information. 32-bit floating-point audio provides a virtually noiseless representation and allows for extensive processing and manipulation without introducing quantization errors.
  • It’s important to note that the choice of bit depth is typically made during the recording phase, as converting from a higher bit depth to a lower one can result in loss of information. It is generally recommended to use the highest bit depth your equipment supports throughout the production process to maintain audio quality and flexibility. The final delivery format, such as CD or streaming, may require converting to a specific bit depth based on the target platform’s requirements.
